A Painting Sold!

Let the Winds of the Heavens Dance between You

I am so thrilled! I sold my Kahlil Gibran painting at the Kirstenbosch exhibition to a lady from Finland! This was one of the paintings that was rejected at a recent selection day - I have dabbed on it since, I added a shawl on the woman's shoulder, which makes a strong triangular shape and played down the face of her partner. I had varnished the painting and had to go out and buy a varnish remover so I could make some changes!

Congratulations Dianne! I can see why this woman wanted this particular painting. It is exceptional! There are some great areas in this painting which bring together the whole. Clearly the red color draws attention as well as the strong shapes. It is truly a beautiful piece!

I bet those paintings are going to fly out of that exhibit!

Congratulations again!

Oh, well done, Dianne. Not surprised it sold, it is fabulous. I am envious of your ability to make so many different elements into such a beautiful whole. And it is such a joyful image.

Woo-Hoo Diane!
I enlarged, but still can't tell for sure,,,is this work a collage? It seems there is text,,,of course that could also be painted.
I'd love to see this IRL,,,it's a gorgeous piece,,,,no surprise it sold!

Hi Babs, Thanks for comment! I painted this using many layers of acrylic. The first image to appear was a musician sitting at a piano, I continued painting with this in mind and the painting became to realistic and tight, so I partially obliterated the image, turned the work upside-down and waited for the painting to speak to me. Quite a few transformations occurred until the image of the dancing girl appeared. Also the leg and shoe of her partner was there. It so reminded me of the line from "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran so I then decided I needed those words in the painting. I tried to paint them in and made a real mess of it, so I printed out the words from my computer, applied layers of acrylic medium to the back of the page and then soaked off the paper, leaving a clear layer with words. I then pasted them on to the painting with acrylic medium, this is the only piece of collage on the painting.
The painting took three months of daily painting to complete!

Diane, thanks so much for the detailed explanation,,,this sounds much like how I often work.
Many transformations. I've done some transfers, but not in the method you used. I've been going to try that forever,,,,,just never have.I may play around with that today!
When you said you had to buy a varnish remover, I thought maybe you'd been working in oil, so I was glad you explained that by saying it's acrylic.
Thank you!

Hi Dianne, I also thought it might be oil but your acrylic is great. I am always disappointed with my acrylics and I beleive its because you need to layer and layer otherwise it just looks flat. Congrats on your sale - it really is a lovely work, wish I could have seen it for real! What size was it?

Hi Carolann, the painting is 98cm by 68cm. Some of my work is just one layer, but to stop it looking flat, you need to glaze it a few times - go to Kim's blog, she has a great method explained in a recent posting, she uses multiple layers of clear glaze and gives her recipe - such a generous person!
I work in acrylic, oil and watercolour. I love the texture I can get with acrylic in my studio but can't get the hang of them outdoors since the paint dries on my palette so fast despite trying every wet palette available. I use oil or watercolour in my Plein Air expeditions.

Wow, it was quite a large painting, must have been gorgeous.
Sounds like a lot of work went into it.
