The Surge

The Surge
92cm x 92cm
Acrylic
This is an imaginary landscape that has been painted in many thick and thin layers of acrylic. I love to put down an opaque layer and then glaze over it with medium tinted slightly with colour. I then tend to destroy some of this with a new opaque and tint layer. This painting has taken months to complete!
I am fascinated by water, its movement, its sheer power and the amazing colours that are reflected as the light passes through the tumbling mass of frothy liquid.

This is absolutely beautiful. I love the colours you have combined together so I can almost feel the cool water. Fantastic.

Dianne, this work is georgeous! I love it and the layers are amazing! Don't you find that is one technique which gives so much depth to acrylic (and probably oils, too) paintings? I just love this! The colors are so rich and you have captured the movement of the water beautifully!

I also love water and find the healing properties are fabulous - if you are in it, drink it or observe it! I always say I do my best thinking in the shower! :-) This is truly beautiful work.

You had ask if the reason I changed my blog format was security. Origionally that was not the case, however it has become one of the positives of doing so. I really needed something which was not so linear and could connect better with my web site. It is still a work in progress, but slowly it is moving forward.

Thanks Dianne for all you do!

Magnificent, Dianne! And an inspiration. I've had an oil I overworked all summer. You've inspired me to have at it again. So great to hear from you. Hope your husband is feeling better.

Dear Kathy, your messages always uplift me!

Dear Babs, I seem to be moving towards a love of colour and movement and I am trying to portray this, I am so glad you see these things in my painting.

Dear Suzanne, my whole process involves many layers and changes and I got used to allowing this to happen. Don't see it as overworking, it is just the evolution of the painting.

Dear Kim, I think that layering can be done with such ease with acrylics due to the quick drying capabilites of the paint. I would loose my way if I had to wait for a week for the layer to dry.

I am fascinated by moving water and am repeated drawn to its mesmerizing power. We live close to the sea and in winter we have fantastic storms where the sea is churned up into an amazing force. We have a tanker on our beach at the moment that was run aground in one of our storms, luckily no-one was hurt and they seem to have prevented an oil slick disaster(Cape Town used to be called The Cape of Storms!)

a waterfall, I can hear it and it is as if I was standing nearby, trying to take a (mental) picture of it, but drops are splashing on my lense. I like the idea that this is a "slow" painting, has grown over time...

Dear Andrea,
Yes, this took many months and layers of paint to finally appear as this image of water, a real transformation painting.
